From Carbondale to Carbondale
Read about our Sister Gertrude Lyng
Ann Lyng was born in Carbondale PA on June 4, 1862. She entered the IHMs in Carbondale in February of 1879, received the habit in May of 1879, and professed in April of 1881; she died in Carbondale at St. Joseph’s Hospital on June 14, 1937 following surgery after a year-long illness. Her funeral was held at St. Rose of Lima Church in Carbondale. Additionally, she is buried in Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery in Greenfield Township, just outside of Carbondale.
At reception Ann was given the name Sister Gertrude. She served as a music teacher at St. Patrick’s Orphanage in Scranton, several years at Holy Rosary School in Scranton, and at St. Joseph School in Renovo, PA. She gave 58 years of joyful, loving service to God’s people; newspaper articles about her funeral state that the body of St. Rose Church was filled with many nuns, priests, members of St. Rose Parish, and people from all parts of the valley.
