Saint Joseph’s Center (Scranton, PA) serves individuals with developmental challenges and their families, as well as persons seeking maternity and adoption services. Founded in 1888, St. Joe’s is the oldest IHM Sponsored work and over these past 136 years, this ministry of service to the most vulnerable of God’s people has continued to evolve and expand. Now covering three counties in Northeastern Pennsylvania, the work of St. Joseph’s Center touches thousands of lives each day bringing care, concern and compassion to all they serve. Services
Saint Joseph’s Center’s main facility houses persons who have profound developmental impairments, physical challenges, sensory impairments and serious medical conditions. In addition, Saint Joseph’s offers residential care in 13 satellite homes for people who are more medically stable. Each smaller facility is designed to meet the specific needs and personal tastes of those who live there.
Nonresidential services provided to persons with disabilities who reside in Lackawanna, Susquehanna or Wayne County include:
- Home-based Early Intervention Services for children, from birth to three years of age, who are experiencing developmental delays
- Family Aid, which provides competent sitter-type services for a specific number of hours a month for a person who has retardation and lives at home
- Respite Care, which is provided in the family’s home or in a host home
- Specialized Respite Care, which is utilized by families who live with an individual who is dually diagnosed with mental retardation and mental health
- Supported Living Services, which assist a person with retardation to live independently
The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Therapy Building at St. Joseph’s Center offers a variety of out-patient therapies to all citizens of Northeast Pennsylvania.
Besides offering pregnancy and adoption counseling, the Center maintains a maternity shelter for women who experience an untimely or unplanned pregnancy. Saint Joseph’s provides traditional infant adoptions, as well as adoptions of children who have special needs.
