Sister M. Gertrude Lyng, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Monday, June 14, 1937, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA.
She was born on June 14, 1862 in Carbondale, PA and given the name Ann. She was the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Farrell Lyng. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 12, 1879, received the religious habit on May 13, 1879, and made profession of her vows on April 19, 1881.
Sister Gertrude served as a music teacher at St. Patrick’s Orphanage in Scranton, PA; Holy Rosary School in Scranton, PA; and St. Joseph School in Renovo, PA.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary (toddler) and Nellie Lyng.
She is survived by a sister, Catherine Norton of Carbondale, PA.
The funeral will be Thursday, June 17, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Rose’s Church in Carbondale, followed by interment at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery in Greenfield Township, PA.
