I Choose the Softest Yarn
Read about Sister Bernadette's most cherished ministry.

In 1982, my mother was diagnosed with brain cancer and she died a year later. One of the most difficult things for her was the loss of her hair from the cobalt treatments. She said her head was always cold and a wig was too scratchy. It was she who taught me to crochet, and I have made afghans, baby outfits, sweaters, etc. But when I saw a book which featured chemo caps for cancer patients I remembered my mom. Thus began my choice to do something positive for people who suffer as she did. This effort gives me the opportunity to pray for the person who will wear the hat, thank God for the gift of crocheting, and pray for my mom. Sometimes I crochet a scarf to go with the hat for the person who may have had long hair and now has a cold neck as well as head. I choose the softest yarn I can find and the brightest colors to help brighten spirits. There is no deadline for completing the hats, and when there is a bag full of them they go to the cancer center and are put into a basket for anyone to take. This is a form of ministry which I deeply cherish and appreciate.
