Sister Mary Ruth Samon, IHM

August 6, 1911 – May 1, 1999

Sister Mary Ruth Samon, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, May 1, 1999, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Daughter of the late Michael and Ellen Boyle Samon, she was born on August 6, 1911 in New York, NY; and given the name Margaret Mabel. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1931, made her temporary profession of vows on August 2, 1933, and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1936.

Sister Mary Ruth served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Mary of Mount Carmel Elementary School in Dunmore, PA, from 1940 to 1951; St. Patrick Elementary School in Spangler, PA Our Lady of Mount Carmel Elementary School in Asbury Park, NJ; St. Patrick Elementary School in Oneida, NY; St. Dominic Elementary School in Oyster Bay, NY; St. Thomas Elementary School in Providence, RI; St. Matthew Elementary School in Wilmington, DE; St. Ann Elementary School in Devon, CT; as well as at elementary schools located in New Bern, NC; Baltimore, MD; and Forest Hills, NY.

Sister Mary Ruth served as a staff member at the Marywood College Post Office in Scranton, PA, in 1985; telespond volunteer at the Marian Convent, PA, from 1989 to 1990; and receptionist at the IHM Center in Scranton, PA, from 1990 to 1994. Sister also served as a secretary at Our Lady of Grace Center in Manhasset, NY; and St. Dominic Elementary School in Oyster Bay, NY.

Sister Mary Ruth served as a prayer minister in East Rockaway, NY, from 1988 to 1989; and from 1994 until the time of her death at the Marian Convent.

She received Bachelor degree in elementary education, and a Master of Science degree in elementary education, both from Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Anna Morrison and Helen Costa; and four brothers, Edward, George, John and Harry.

She is survived by a sister, Isabel Bretz of Mebane, NC; nieces and nephews, including Florence Godbald of Coram, NY; grandnieces and grandnephews.

The funeral will be Wednesday, May 5 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Tuesday between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
