Sister M. Ignatia Murphy, IHM

Sister M. Ignatia Murphy, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, May 8, 1999 at Marian Community Hospital in Carbondale, Pennsylvania.
She was born on August 15, 1919 in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, and given the name Kathryn. She was the daughter of the late Patrick J. and Marie Ginley Murphy. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1938, made temporary profession of her vows on May 8, 1941, and final profession of her vows on August 2, 1944.
Sister Ignatia served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Basil High School in Dushore, PA, from 1955 to 1958 and 1959 to 1966; St. Leo High School in Ashley, PA from 1958 to 1959; St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton, PA from 1967 to 1969; St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale, PA from 1969 to 1984; St. Ephrem School in Brooklyn, NY; St. Ambrose School in Bridgeport, CT; St. Ann Elementary School in Devon, CT; St. Joseph Elementary School in Renovo, PA; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Clinton, MD; and Mt. Holly Regional Catholic School in Mount Holly, NJ.
Sister also served as a catechetical instructor at St. Ignatius Catechetical Center in Kingston, PA, from 1945 to 1946; and instructor at the Educational Enrichment Institute at the IHM Center in Scranton, PA, from 1990 to 1992.
From 1992 until the time of her death, Sister Ignatia served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.
She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education, and a Master of Science degree in history, both from Marywood College. She was a member of the National Catholic Education Association.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Lillian Murphy and Betty (Elizabeth Jean) Kilgannon.
She is survived by a sister, Theresa Marie Purcell of Westwood, NJ, nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be Wednesday, May 12 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Tuesday between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
