Zita McGlynn, IHM

Sister M. Zita McGlynn, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, March 26, 1955, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA.

She was born on October 13, 1876 in Stockton, PA, and given the name Margaret (Madge). She was the daughter of the late Daniel and Bridget McElwee McGlynn. She entered the IHM Congregation on June 25, 1897, received the religious habit on February 2, 1898, and made profession of her vows on April 16, 1900.

Sister Zita served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Paul School in Scranton, PA; St. Alphonsus School in Tillamook OR; and St. Charles School in Sugar Notch, PA. She served as a teacher and convent superior at St. Lawrence School in Portland, OR.

At Marywood College in Scranton, PA, Sister served as dean of residence.

Sister Zita served as principal and superior at the following schools: St. Thomas School in Ashville, PA; Our Lady of Good Council School in Inwood, NY; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School in Asbury Park, NJ; and St. Joseph School in New Bern, NC.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Owen and Jeremiah; and two sisters, Ellen Farrell and Bridget M. Kane.

She is survived by a sister, Mary Mullin of Wilkes-Barre, PA; three brothers, Daniel and James A., both of Wilkes-Barre, PA, and John of New York City, NY; and seven nieces and nephews, including, Sister Zita Marie Kane, IHM, a member of the South Scranton Catholic High School faculty.

The funeral will be Tuesday, March 29, at 10:00 a.m. with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Catherine’s Church in Moscow, with interment to follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Monday at St. Agnes Place in Elmhurst, PA.
