Sister M. Callista Hopkins, IHM

August 21, 1901 – March 15, 1955

Sister M. Callista Hopkins, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Tuesday, March 15, 1955, at Holy Rosary Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on August 21, 1901 in Taylor, PA, and given the name Mary. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Walsh Hopkins. She entered the IHM Congregation on April 4, 1922, received the religious habit on August 15, 1922, and made profession of her vows on August 15, 1924.

Sister Callista served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Joseph School in Renovo, PA; St. Ephrem School in Brooklyn, NY; and Holy Rosary School in Scranton, PA.

She was preceded in death by an infant sister, Margaret.

She is survived by two sisters, Sister M. Oswald Marie, IHM, stationed at St. Clare’s Convent in Scranton, PA, and Sarah Hefferon of Scranton, PA; two brothers, Patrick of Scranton, PA, and Edward of Old Forge, PA; nieces and nephews, including Sister M. Anine Hopkins, IHM, stationed at St. Rita’s Convent in Dundalk, MD; and two cousins, Sister Mary Coleman, IHM, at Marywood Seminary in Scranton, PA, and Sister Mary St. Augustine of the Good Shepherd Sisters, stationed in Philadelphia, PA.

The funeral will be Friday, March 18 at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Rosary Church in Scranton, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Wednesday from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, and Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm at Holy Rosary Convent
