Sister M. Wenceslaus McHugh, IHM

May 8, 1893 – September 13, 1954

Sister M. Wenceslaus McHugh, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Tuesday, September 13, 1954, at St. Catherine’s Hospital in Brooklyn, NY.

She was born on May 8, 1893 in Scranton, PA, and given the name Anna R. She was the daughter of the late Michael and Honora “Nora” McHugh McHugh. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 15, 1912, received the religious habit on August 2, 1913, and made profession of her vows on July 6, 1915.

Sister Wenceslaus served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Ephrem School in Brooklyn, NY; St. Bernardine School in Baltimore, MD; St. Joseph High School in Renovo, PA; St. Rose High School in Carbondale, PA; and Marywood Seminary in Scranton, PA.

At the time of her death, Sister was serving as principal at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs School in Forest Hills, NY.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, John J. and Dr. William Jerome, and an aunt in community, Sister M. Cephas McHugh, IHM.

She is survived by two brothers, Monsignor Francis Patrick, pastor of Annunciation Church in Williamsport, PA, and Dr. Gerald Michael of Scranton, PA; two sisters, Katherine Gordon and Mary McHugh, both of Scranton, PA; nieces and nephews.

A high mass of requiem will be celebrated on Thursday, September 16, at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church, Forest Hills, NY. The body will be brought Thursday afternoon to St. Mary’s Convent in Dunmore, PA; and will lie in state until 10:00 a.m. Friday, when a high mass will be celebrated in St. Mary’s Church (Dunmore) by the Right Reverend Msgr. Francis McHugh. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA.
