Sister M. Paula Malia, IHM

Sister M. Paula Malia, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Friday, July 27, 1934, at Bon Secour’s Hospital in Baltimore, MD.
She was born on August 26, 1874 in Scranton, PA, and given the name Catherine (Kate). She was the daughter of the late Matthew and Marie Cavanaugh Malia. Before entering the community, Kate was a teacher at International Correspondence School in Scranton. She entered the IHM Congregation on June 21, 1898, received the religious habit on July 15, 1899, and made profession of her vows on July 27, 1901.
Sister Paula served as a teacher at Laurel Hill Academy in Susquehanna, PA, and St. John the Evangelist High School in Scranton, PA. For many years, she also served as supervisor of IHM schools.
For the past few years, Sister Paula a Ph.D. student at Catholic University in Washington, DC.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Matthew Jr.
She is survived by two sisters, Anna Ruddy of Scranton, PA, and Elizabeth Reilly of Jersey City, NJ.; three brothers, Thomas and John of Chicago, IL, and William of New York; a sister-in-law, Mary Irene Malia of Scranton, PA; nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Tuesday, July 31 at 9:00 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Church in Moscow, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Monday at St. Agnes Place in Elmhurst, PA.
