Sister M. Helena Diskin, IHM

Sister M. Helena Diskin, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Monday, July 13, 1953, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA.
She was born on August 12, 1873, in Scranton, PA, and given the name Catherine. She was the daugther of the late Patrick and Sarah Costello Diskin. The family immigrated to the United States, and settled in Scranton, PA. She entered the IHM Congregation on April 30, 1902, received the religious habit on July 31, 1902, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1904.
Sister Helena served as a teacher at the following schools: Laurel Hill Academy in Susquehanna, PA; St. John the Evangelist School in Pittston, PA; St. Basil School in Dushore, PA; and St. Patrick School in Scranton, PA.
Sister served as principal and superior at St. Ann School in Scranton, PA, and St. Mary Elementary School in Avoca, PA.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Sister M. Anthanasius Diskin, IHM, and Sister M. Antoinette Diskin, IHM.
She is survived by a brother, John of Scranton, PA, nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Thursday, July 16, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church in Carbondale, PA. Interment followed at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery in Greenfield Township, PA. Friends may call on Wednesday after 2:00 p.m. at St. Rose’s Convent in Carbondale.
