Sister M. Cyril Scanlon, IHM

Sister M. Cyril Scanlon, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Wednesday, June 26, 1985, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on January 10, 1923 in Brooklyn, NY, and given the name Mary. She was daughter of the late Walter D. and Mary Agnes Keliher Scanlon. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1942, received the religious habit on May 10, 1943, and made profession of her vows on May 8, 1945.

Sister Cyril served as a language and history teacher at the following schools: Holy Rosary High School in Scranton, PA; St. Patrick High School in Olyphant, PA; St. Joseph High School in Renovo, PA; Mother of Mercy High School in Washington, NC; St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay, NY; and Maria Regina Diocesan High School in Uniondale, NY. She also taught at high schools located in Pittsburgh, PA.

Sister served as principal at St. John the Evangelist High School in Pittston, PA; St. Joseph High School in Renovo, PA; and St. Patrick High School in Olyphant, PA.

She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Walter D., Jr.

She is survived by two sisters, Rita Ferris of Oyster Bay, NY, and Dorothy Cahill of Bohemia, NY; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Friday, June 28, at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, with interment to follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Thursday afternoon or evening at the Marian Convent.
