Sister M. Herberta Burns, IHM

Sister M. Herberta Burns, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Monday, June 24, 1985 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.
She was born on July 3, 1918 in Newark, New Jersey, and given the name Mary V. She was the daughter of the late Herbert and Elizabeth Corcoran Burns. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1936, received the religious habit on May 3, 1937, and made profession of her vows on May 8, 1939.
Sister Herberta served as a teacher at the following schools: St. John the Evangelist Elementary/High School in Scranton, PA, from 1939 to 1946; St. Mary of the Mount High School in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1946 to 1950; Immaculata High School in New York, NY, from 1950 to 1965; Bishop Guilfoyle High School in Altoona, PA, from 1965 to 1966; Most Holy Rosary High School in Syracuse, New York, from 1966 to 1978; St. Alphonsus High School in New York, NY, from 1978 to 1980; and Cathedral High School in New York, NY, from 1980 to 1984.
Sister served as principal at Most Holy Rosary High School in Syracuse, New York, from 1966 to 1978.
From 1984 until the time of her death, Sister Herberta served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.
She is survived by three brothers, John of East Norwich of NY, Frank of West Palm Beach of FL, and Vincent of Juno Beach, FL, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Wednesday, June 26 with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent Chapel, interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Tuesday afternoon or evening.
