Sister M. Claver McAndrew, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, April 1, 1943, at St. Agnes Place in Elmhurst, PA.
She was born on August 26, 1867 in Carbondale, PA, and given the name Maria. She was the daughter of the late Patrick J. and Bridget Lynch McAndrew. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 7, 1888, received the religious habit on December 27, 1888, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1891.
Sister Claver served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Patrick Elementary School in White Haven, PA; St. Basil Elementary School in Dushore, PA; St. Patrick Elementary School in Olyphant, PA; St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA; and St. John the Evangelist High School in Pittston, PA.
Sister also served in child care for resident children at St. Joseph’s Shelter in Scranton, PA.
She was preceded in death by a brother, William; and four sisters, Hannah McAndrew, Elizabeth McAndrew, Bridget Heid, and Gertrude Dunleavey.
She is survived by a brother, John of Childs, PA; a sister, Margaret McAndrew of Carbondale, PA; several nieces and nephews, including Reverend Charles Heid, of St. Peter’s Cathedral in Scranton, PA, and Dr. Paul C. McAndrew, a captain in the US Army Medical Corps and medical director of the West Mountain Sanitarium in Scranton, PA.
The funeral will be Saturday, April 3, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Church in Moscow, PA. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow.
