Sister Mary Antonia Heffernan, IHM

January 17, 1879 – February 4, 1955

Sister Mary Antonia Heffernan, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Friday, February 4, 1955, at St. Agnes’ Place in Elmhurst, PA.

She was born on January 17, 1879 in Plymouth, PA, and given the name Mary. She was the daughter of the late Andrew and Mary Connole Heffernan. She entered the IHM Congregation on on August 15, 1898, received the religious habit on July 15, 1899, and made profession of her vows on July 27, 1901.

Sister Mary Antonia served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Alphonsus High School in New York, NY; St. Leo High School in Ashley, PA; St. Rosalia High School in Pittsburgh, PA; St. Michael’s Industrial School for Boys in Hoban Heights, PA; St. John the Evangelist High School in Pittston, PA; and most recently at St. Basil High School in Dushore, PA.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas F., and George P., and a sister, Catherine Pringle.

She is survived by three brothers, Major Leo G. of Los Angeles, CA, John V. of Alexandria, VA, and Andrew J. of Wilkes-Barre, PA; three sisters, Anna Murphy and Nora C. Heffernan, both of of Wilkes-Barre, PA, and Josephine R. Wagner of Oakland, CA; nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Monday, February 7 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Church in Moscow, PA. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call on Sunday at St. Agnes’ Place, Elmhurst.
