Sister M. Benedicta O’Brien, IHM

Sister M. Benedicta O’Brien, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Friday, April 12, 1946, at St. Agnes Place in Elmhurst, PA.
She was born on March 13, 1878 in Pittston, PA, and given the name Agnes. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Margaret Noone O’Brien. She entered the IHM Congregation on March 25, 1902, received the religious habit on July 31, 1902, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1904.
Sister Benedicta served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Andrew School in Portland, OR; IHM Academy in Coeur d’Alene, ID; and St. Rita School in Dundalk, MD.
Sister served as principal and superior at the following schools: St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay, NY; and Sacred Heart School in LaPlata, MD.
Sister Benedicta also served as directress of Marywood Seminary, and later dean of residents at Marywood College, both in Scranton, PA.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Thomas, Patrick Joseph, Michael and Luke; and two sisters, Bridget O’Brien and Mary Magdalen Moylan.
She is survived by a brother, James, and a sister, Margaret G. O’Brien, both of Philadelphia, PA; and several nieces and nephews, including Sister Maria Joannes Moylan, IHM, of Philadelphia, PA.
The funeral will be Monday, April 15, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Church in Moscow, PA. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow.
