Sister M. Annunciation Hughes, IHM
January 11, 1882 – August 16, 1967

Sister M. Annunciation Hughes, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Wednesday, August 16, 1967, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA.
She was born on January 11, 1882 in England, and given the name Sarah. She was the daughter of the late Peter and Mary McDonough Hughes. In 1885, the family came to America, and settled in the Minooka section of Scranton, PA. She entered the IHM Congregation on July 2, 1904, received the religious habit on December 8, 1904, and made profession of her vows on December 27, 1906.
Sister Annunciation served in child care for resident children at the following institutions: St. John’s Home in Cresson, PA; St. Michael’s Industrial School for Boys, in Hoban Heights, PA; and St. Joseph’s Shelter, in Scranton, PA.
Sister served as a housekeeper at St. Leo’s Convent in Ashley, PA, and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Convent in Altoona, PA.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Patrick, and two sisters, Mary Hughes and Margaret Hughes.
She is survived a brother, Thomas of Scranton, PA; two sisters, Catherine Brundage of Philadelphia, PA, and Jule Dunleavy of Hyattsville, MD; and several nieces and nephews, including Sister M. Emeria Brundage, IHM, stationed in Bridgeport, CT, and Wilmer Brundage of Philadelphia, PA.
The funeral will be Saturday, August 19 at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Friday after 2:00 p.m. at the Marian Convent.
