Sister Kathleen Maher, IHM, (formerly known as Sister M. Teresetta) of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, September 3, 1994, at St. Mary’s Convent in Manhasset, NY.

Born on November 14, 1933 in New York City, NY, she was the daughter of the late John and Winifred Carroll Maher. She entered the IHM Congregation in Scranton on September 8, 1950, received the religious habit on August 2, 1951, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1953.

Sister Kathleen served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Raymond Elementary School in East Rockaway, NY; St. Ambrose Elementary School in Bridgeport, CT; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Bellefonte, PA; St. Patrick Elementary School in Spangler, PA; and St. Paul Elementary School in Cranston, RI. She also taught at schools located in New York City, NY.

From 1976 until the time of her death, Sister Kathleen served as a teacher at St. Mary’s Elementary School in Manhasset, NY.

She was preceded in death by a brother, John Francis.

She is survived by a sister, Patricia Larsen of Coldwater, Ontario, Canada; a brother, Patrick J. of Fort Lauderdale, FL; nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Tuesday, September 5 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Manhasset, NY. Friends may call at St. Mary’s Convent, Northern Blvd., Manhasset, on Monday from 3:00 – 5:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. Interment will be at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA.


Archival Remembrance:

The sudden death of Sister Kathleen Maher (the former Sister M. Teresetta) on September 3 was a shock to all who knew her. A woman of fidelity, courage and joy, Sr. Kathleen’s love of people and her profound, yet simple goodness had touched the hearts of many. An elementary school teacher, she welcomed students into her heart and taught them to delight in the beauty and wonder of every person. Her years of ministry took her into classrooms in Manhasset, East Rockaway and New York, NY; Bridgeport, CT; Bellefonte and Spangler, PA; and Cranston, RI. Her deep belief in the provident care of God is a consolation for those who mourn the loss of her life here, including her sister and brother, and by the sisters who lived in community with her for the past 18 years, at St. Mary’s Convent in Manhasset, NY.
