Sister Anna Maria Hayes, IHM

December 31, 1881 – January 7, 1948

Sister Anna Maria Hayes, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Wednesday, January 7, 1948, at St. Mary Orphan Home for Girls in Cresson, PA.

She was born on December 31, 1881 in Morris Run, PA, and given the name Margaret Cecilia. She was the daughter of the late David and Margaret Tuckey Hayes. She entered the IHM Congregation on March 25, 1908, received the religious habit on April 13, 1909, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1911.

Sister Anna Maria served as a teacher at the following schools: Our Lady of Mount Carmel Elementary School in Altoona, PA; St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA; and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Elementary School in Barnesboro, PA.

Sister served as principal and superior at Immaculate Conception Elementary School in Lock Haven, PA.

At the time of her death, Sister Anna Maria was the superior at St. Mary Orphan Home for Girls in Cresson, PA, where she responsible for child care for resident girls.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Thomas, David Jr., William J. and Edward; and two sisters, Norma Gilmartin and Helena Hayes.

She is survived by a brother, John J. of Howard Beach, NY; three sisters, Agnes and Elizabeth Hayes, both of Scranton, PA, and Mary O’Hara of Throop, PA; and several nieces and nephews.

A solemn Mass of Requiem will be celebrated at St. Mary Orphan Home in Cresson on Friday, January 9. The funeral will be on Monday, January 12, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Church in Moscow, PA, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow. Friends may call on Saturday and Sunday afternoon at St. Agnes’ Place in Elmhurst, PA.
