Cyprian Campbell, IHM

What a wonderful way to speak of the deceased. Who was this Sister? Miss Mary Campbell was born in Carbondale, PA, in August of 1855. She joined the IHM Sisters in May of 1879, received the habit in December of 1879, and made her profession in November of 1881.

Mary Campbell was given the name Cyprian and was stationed at several schools as well as St. Joseph’s Foundling Home. The following schools benefited from her presence: St. John the Evangelist School in Pittston, PA; Holy Rosary School in Scranton, PA; St. John School in Susquehanna, PA; St. Cecilia Academy in Scranton, PA; St. Patrick School in Scranton, PA; St. Rose School in Carbondale, PA; St. Joseph School in Lock Haven, PA; and St. John the Evangelist in Bellefonte, PA. She left her mark not only with the thousands of students she taught but also with the Sisters with whom she was stationed. Accounts of her life state that she was dedicated to education as well as being kind and charitable.

Her younger sister Jane became Sr. Hildegarde, IHM. The above photo of Sr. Cyprian was taken at a Susquehanna jubilee around 1890. Sister Cyprian died on April 14, 1914 at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary after a long illness. She is buried here on the Marywood Campus.
