IHM Named to the Sports Hall of Fame
Our Sister Susan Brown, IHM, was named to the Luzerne County Sports Hall of Fame.

Sister Susan Brown was named to Luzerne County Sports Hall of Fame. To celebrate Women’s History Month and the contributions of women in sports, Susan was honored as one among 103 women athletes who paved the way for future generations and fought for equality in sports. From the pioneers who forged a path before Title IX to the legendary coaches and athletes, these women have inspired all of those that have followed. With skill, intelligence, and a bold sense of purpose, they became resilient leaders—record makers and record breakers. Each has earned the title of “Champion.” We are inspired by their legacy and join in celebrating these remarkable women who have shaped the future of sports.

Susan’s love of basketball was nurtured by her father who himself was an athlete. He was Susan’s personal coach and biggest supporter.

Susan graduated from St. John’s in Pittston. Her team won two straight Scranton League Championships 73-74 and two Wyoming Valley Conference Championships in 1975-1976. In her final three years of high school, the team posted an amazing 55-7 record. Susan reached her 1000 point mark in her junior year and finished with 1,616 points her senior year. She was a first round inductee of the St. John’s/Seton Catholic Hall of Fame.
Luzerne County Community College was 5th in the nation, and Susan was named to the All-American Team for Junior College and was MVP for both years. She still holds the women’s basketball leading scorer record for the college.
Susan received a full scholarship at Old Dominion University which won two national championships in 1979-1980 with a record of 72-2. She was drafted by Tampa Bay in the women’s basketball league but declined the offer to complete her college education.
In 2005 Sister Susan returned to Old Dominion University to celebrate the 25th anniversary of her 1980 National Championship team.
Today Susan is in her thirtieth year of teaching health and physical education and coaching various sports teams. In her thirtieth year of dedicating herself to health, physical education, and coaching, Susan stands as a testament to the enduring power of passion and commitment. More than just a teacher and coach, she’s a catalyst for growth, fostering a deep-seated love for learning in her students. Whether on the court, field or in the classroom, Susan consistently inspires young people to push their limits, embrace healthy competition, and strive for their personal best. Her impact extends far beyond the curriculum, shaping well-rounded individuals prepared to excel in all aspects of life.
Currently, Sister Susan teaches at Holy Redeemer High School in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
