Sister Stella Maria Untersee, IHM

January 15, 1891 – October 22, 1980

Sister Stella Maria Untersee, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died on Wednesday, October 22, 1980, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, after an extended illness.

Daughter of the late Franz Joseph and Stella Hammond Untersee, she was born on January 15, 1891 in Brookline, Massachusetts; and given the name Marie. She entered the IHM Congregation on July 16, 1920, received the religious habit on December 28, 1920, and made profession of her vows on December 28, 1922.

Sister Stella Maria served as a teacher at the following high schools: St. Ephrem in Brooklyn, NY; St. Mary of the Mount in Pittsburgh; St. John in Pittston; St. Dominic in Oyster Bay, NY; Most Holy Rosary in Syracuse, NY; St. Rosalia in Pittsburgh; Sacred Heart in New York City; St. Joseph in Williamsport; St. Paul in Scranton; St. Mary in Manhasset, NY; and St. Patrick in Scranton.

From 1971 until the time of her death, she served in prayer ministry at the Marian Convent.

She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Arthur H. Rigor da Eva of Brookline, Massachusetts; a brother, Philip of Newark, NJ; and two nephews.

The funeral will be Friday, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in the Marian Convent Chapel. Interment will be at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Thursday afternoon or evening.
