Sister M. Melanie Rowan, IHM

October 22, 1891 – September 3, 1980

Sister M. Melanie Rowan, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Wednesday, September 3, 1980, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on October 22, 1891, in Scranton, PA, and given the name Ruth Madeline. She was the daughter of the late Patrick and Mary Corcoran Rowan. She entered the IHM Congregation on January 6, 1918, received the religious habit on August 5, 1918, and made profession of her vows on August 6, 1920.

Sister Melanie served as a registered nurse at the following institutions: St. Joseph’s Shelter in Scranton, PA, from 1920 to 1926; St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA, from 1926 to 1929; Marywood College in Scranton, PA, from 1926 to 1929 and 1952 to 1957; and St. Joseph’s Children’s and Maternity Hospital in Scranton, PA, from 1941 to 1952.

From 1957 until the time of her death, Sister Melanie was a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She was preceded in death by six brothers, William Henry, Thomas F., Charles Francis, John Joseph, Edward, and Francis; and four sisters, Margaret Mary Rowan, Ellen “Nellie” Rowan, Mary Rowan, and Catherine Flood.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Friday, September 5, at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent, with interment to follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Thursday afternoon and evening.
