Sister Mary Samuel McKeown, IHM

February 24, 1922 – October 22, 1989

Sister Mary Samuel McKeown, IHM,of the Congregation of Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Sunday, October 22, 1989, at the Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on February 24, 1922 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and was the daughter of the late Samuel and Catherine Nolan McKeown. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1940, received the religous habit on May 8, 1941, and made profession of her vows on May 10, 1943.

Sister Mary Samuel served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Paul High School in Scranton, PA; Marywood Seminary in Scranton, PA; Dunmore Catholic High School in Dunmore, PA; Bishop Hannon High School in Scranton, PA; IHM Academy in Coeur d’Alene, ID; St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay, NY; and St. John the Evangelist High School in Clinton, MD. She also served as a one-on-one tutor in the Scranton area from 1983 to 1989.

From 1983 until the time of her death, Sister Mary Samuel served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree at Marywood College. She completed further studies in mathematics at the University of Illinois, the University of Scranton, Notre Dame University and Catholic University, attained certification as a catechist in the Diocese of Rockville Centre, and also took courses in spirituality and theology.

She survived by a brother, Samuel A., of West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, a niece and a nephew.

The funeral will be Wednesday, October 25 with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in the Marian Convent chapel, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call on Tuesday afternoon at the Marian Covent.
