Sister M. Kateri Nicolaus, IHM, of the Congregation of Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Friday, September 22, 1989, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on January 6, 1918 in Brooklyn, NY, and given the name Elizabeth. She was the daughter of the late Adam J. and Elizabeth Murray Nicolaus. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1938, received the religious habit on May 8, 1939, and made profession of her vows on May 8, 1941.

Sister Kateri served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Paul High School in Edgewood; RI; Bishop Guilfoyle High School in Altoona, PA; Bishop Klonowski High School in Scranton, PA; St. Leo High School in Ashley, PA; Bishop Hoban High School in Wilkes-Barre, PA; St. Mary’s High School in Manhasset, NY; IHM Academy in Coeur d’Alene, ID; and Immaculate Conception High School in Lock Haven, PA. She served as a catechetical instructor St. Ignatius Catechetical Center in Kingston, PA.

Sister also served as a member of the leadership team for the IHM Congregation, as well as the director of apostolic planning for the congregation in Scranton, PA.

Sister Kateri’s most recent teaching assignment was at St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay, NY.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Alice B. Hynes, and three brothers, George, Adam Jr., and Reverend Eugene T. Nicolaus, S.S.

She is survived by a brother, John J. of St. Petersburg, FL, nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Tuesday September 26, at 11:00 a.m with Mass of Christian Burial at the IHM Center in Scranton. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Monday afternoon or evening at the Marian Convent.
