Sister Mary Nicholas Scanlon, IHM

Sister Mary Nicholas Scanlon, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Sunday, May 8, 1977, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on March 6, 1911, in New Britain, CT, and given the name Anna Loretta. She was the daughter of the late Michael J. and Nora Finnerty Scanlon. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1930, made temporary profession of her vows on April 24, 1933, and made final profession of her vows on August 1, 1936.

Sister Mary Nicholas served as a teacher at the following schools: Holy Name of Jesus Elementary School in Forty Fort, PA; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Binghamton, NY; Immaculate Conception Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1959 to 1965; St. Agnes School in Baltimore, MD, from 1966 to 1967; St. Paul School in Cranston, RI, from 1967 to 1976; and Sacred Heart School in La Plata, MD. She also taught at schools located in Kingston, PA.

Sister also served in child care for resident children at St. Joseph’s Children and Maternity Hospital in Scranton, PA, from 1965 to 1966.

From 1976 until the time of her death, Sister Mary Nicholas was a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Cornelius, Edmund, John and Thomas; and four sisters, Mary Scanlon, Loretta Scanlon, Helen Stannard and Bernadette Long.

She is survived by two sisters, Mildred Lally and Sister Mary Cornelius Scanlon, IHM; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Wednesday, May 11, at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Tuesday at the Marian Convent.
