Sister M. Placidus Smith, IHM

Sister M. Placidus Smith, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Sunday, May 15, 1977, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on January 30, 1895, in Hollidaysburg, PA, and given the name Lillian Mary. She was the daughter of the late Hugh and Mary Dublin Smith. She entered the IHM Congregation on July 2, 1911, received the religious habit on August 2, 1912, and made profession of her vows on August 3, 1914.

Sister Placidus taught music at the following schools: St. Patrick Elementary School in Spangler, PA, from 1914 to 1918 and 1919 to 1921; St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA, from 1918 to 1919; St. John Elementary School in Susquehanna, PA, from 1921 to 1923, 1925 to 1927, and 1953 to 1954; St. Bernard Elementary School in Hastings, PA, from 1923 to 1925; St. Basil Elementary School in Dushore, PA, from 1931 to 1947; St. Rosalia Elementary School in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1947 to 1949; St. Matthew Elementary School in East Stroudsburg, PA, from 1949 to 1953; St. Ann Elementary School in Devon, CT, from 1954 to 1955; St. Alphonsus Elementary School in New York, NY, from 1955 to 1958; and St. Agnes Elementary School in Baltimore, MD, from 1959 to 1972.

Sister also served in child care for resident children at the Catholic Child Care Center in Hollidaysburg, PA, from 1972 to 1973.

From 1973 until the time of her death, Sister Placidus was a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Antoinette Smith, Mildred M. Kearns, and Alice Treese, and three brothers, Alton, Hugh III, and Paul.

She is survived by three sisters, Lyle Isable Foor of Hollidaysburg, PA, Margaret A. Burnett of Long Beach, CA, and Marion Dillon of Dundalk, MD; nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Tuesday, May 17, at 9:00 a.m. at the Marian Convent, interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call Monday at the Marian Convent.
