Sister Mary Grace McCarthy, IHM

September 29, 1909 – August 29, 2000

Sister Mary Grace McCarthy, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Tuesday, August 29, 2000, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on on September 29, 1909 in Renovo, Pennsylvania, and given the name Grace Elizabeth. She was the daughter of the late James and Catherine Lane McCarthy. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1932, made her temporary profession of vows on April 30, 1935, and her final profession of vows on August 1, 1938.

Sister Mary Grace served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Leo High School in Ashley, PA, from 1937 to 1944; St. Joseph Elementary School in Williamsport, PA, from 1949 to 1952 and 1977 to 1983; St. Bernard Elementary School in Hastings, PA; St. Mary of the Assumption Elementary School in Upper Marlboro, MD; St. Ambrose Elementary School in Bridgeport, CT; Our Lady of Good Counsel Elementary School in Inwood, NY; St. Raymond Elementary School in East Rockaway, NY; St. Thomas Elementary School in Providence, RI; as well as at elementary schools located in Pittsburgh, PA, and La Plata, MD.

From 1983 until the time of her death, Sister Mary Grace served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in math, and a Master of Arts degree in religious studies, both from Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Sister Grace Marie, IHM, and Catherine Simon, a brother, John, and a nephew, J. Patrick Simon.

She is survived by three nephews, John Andrew McCarthy and George Simon, both of Renovo, PA, and James McCarthy, Temple Hills, MD, and two nieces, Alicia Garcia of Oakley, CA, and Grace Marie Hockenberry of Renovo, PA.

The funeral will be Tuesday, September 5 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Monday between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
