Sister Mary Clotilda Russell, IHM

April 26, 1891 – February 14, 1937

Sister Mary Clotilda Russell, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Sunday, February 14, 1937, at St. John’s Orphanage, Cresson, PA.

She was born on April 26, 1891 in Renovo, PA, and given the name Irene. She was the daughter of the late David and Mary Jane Burke Russell. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 15, 1909, received the religious habit on December 29, 1909, and made profession of her vows on December 27, 1911.

Sister Mary Clotilda served as a teacher at the following schools: St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA; St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA; St. Rosalia Elementary School in Pittsburgh, PA; and St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Bellefonte, PA; and St. John School for Boys in Cresson, PA.

She received a degree in education from Lock Haven State Teachers College, and was on the varsity hockey team in 1930.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph; and three sisters, Sadie and Elizabeth (infants), and Catherine Russell.

She is survived by two brothers, Thomas and James, both of Renova, PA; four sisters, Mary Binder, Teresa Moran, Jane (Jennie) Hooley, all of Renova, PA, and Alice Kertis of Erie, PA; nieces and nephews.

A solemn high mass of requiem will be celebrated in Renova on Tuesday, February 16. The funeral will be Wednesday, February 17, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Church in Moscow. Interment will be at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA.
