Sister Marie Elise Loughran, IHM

February 29, 1884 – February 14, 1948

Sister Marie Elise Loughran, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, February 14, 1948, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA.

She was born on February 29, 1884 in Archbald, PA, and given the name Lucy Ellen. She was the daughter of the late Patrick F. and Mary E. O’Hara Loughran. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 4, 1920, received the religious habit on August 2, 1920, and made profession of her vows on August 15, 1922.

Sister Marie Elise served as a teacher at Marywood Seminary in Scranton, PA, for thirteen years. She later served as superintendent of schools.

Sister Marie Elise served as principal at St. John’s School in Susquehanna, PA, where she also served as superior of the convent.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, James, Thomas, Francis and Reverend John, and a sister, Elizabeth.

She is survived by four sisters, Catherine Loughran of Scranton, PA, and Mary Loughran, Helen Loughran and Theresa Loughran, all of New York City, NY; a brother, William of Scranton, PA; nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Tuesday, February 17 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Church in Moscow, PA. Interment will be at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call on Monday at St. Agnes Place in Elmhurst, PA.
