Sister Maria Martin Flanagan, IHM

December 15, 1908 – April 16, 2001

Sister Maria Martin Flanagan, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Monday, April 16, 2001 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on December 15, 1908 in New York, NY, and given the name Mary. She was the daughter of the late Martin Michael and Mary Ellen Hegarty Flanagan. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 7, 1926, made temporary profession of her vows on January 2, 1929, and final profession of her vows on August 2, 1932.

Sister Maria Martin served as a music teacher at the following schools: St. Joseph High School in Williamsport, PA, in 1929, and from 1936 to 1937; St. Mary Elementary School in Avoca, PA, from 1931 to 1935; St. John the Evangelist High School in Pittston, PA, from 1935 to 1936 and 1946 to 1949; St. Rose High School in Carbondale, PA, from 1942 to 1946; St. Mary Elementary School in Hollidaysburg, PA; St. Mary Elementary School in Patton, PA; St. John the Evangelist School in Bellefonte, PA; St. Dominic ElementarySchool in Oyster Bay, NY; St. Raymond School in East Rockaway, NY; St. Ann Elementary School in Nyack, NY; St. Peter of Alcantara ElementarySchool in Port Washington, NY; as well as at elementary schools located in Pittsburgh, PA.

From 1984 until the time of her death, Sister Maria Martin served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Marywood College, and a Master of Arts degree in music education/voice from Columbia University.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Cecilia Reid, and a brother, Martin.

She is survived by two nieces, Donna Winkler of Mount Prospect, IL, and Clare Frytz of Avon, CT.

The funeral will be Thursday, April 19 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Wednesday between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
