Sister Maria Gabriel McQuade, IHM

Sister Maria Gabriel McQuade, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Tuesday, November 22, 1978, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on May 5, 1898 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and was the daughter of the late Thomas M. and Mary Ann Kitrick McQuade. She entered the IHM Congregation on July 2, 1924, received the religious habit on December 29, 1924, and pronounced her vows on August 15, 1926.

Sister Maria Gabriel served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Cecilia Elementary School in Exeter, PA; St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale, PA; St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA; St. Mary Elementary School in Hollidaysburg, PA; and St. Joseph Elementary School in Williamsport, PA.

Sister served as a catechetical instructor at St. Agnes Catechetical Center in Forest City, PA; St. Peter’s Catechetical Center in Wellsboro, PA; St. Patrick’s Catechetical Center in Milford, PA, and Resurrection Catechetical Center in Muncy, PA. She also served as superior at the following convents: St. Patrick in Milford and Resurrection in Muncy.

Sister Maria Gabriel also served on the support staff of St. Joseph’s Children’s and Maternity Hospital in Scranton, PA.

She is preceded in death by a brother, Thomas.

She is survived by two sisters, Naomi McQuade and Anna Farnen, and a brother, Regis, all of Pittsburgh, PA.

The funeral will be Friday, November 24, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in the Marian Convent Chapel. Interment will follow at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent Wednesday afternoon and all day Thursday.
