Joan Marie MacDonald, IHM

Sister Joan Marie MacDonald, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Congregation died Sunday, December 10, 1978, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on September 19, 1896 in Bronx, NY, and given the name Ann. She was the daughter of the late Alexander and Catherine Chrisholm McDonald. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1930, received the religious habit on April 14, 1931, and pronounced her vows on April 24, 1933.

Sister Joan Marie served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Patrick Elementary School in Oneida, NY; St. Peter of Alcantara Elementary School in Port Washington, NY; St. Dominic Elementary School in Oyster Bay, NY; St. Joseph Elementary School in Danville, PA; and Holy Rosary Elementary School in Scranton, PA. She also taught at elementary schools located in Forest Hills and Manhasset, NY, and Baltimore, MD.

From 1959 until the time of her death, Sister Joan Marie served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She was preceded in death by a brother, John, and two sisters, Margaret MacDonald and Elizabeth “Bessie” Stanley.

She is survived by a niece and several nephews, including the Reverend John McDonald, who is stationed in Texas.

The funeral will be Wednesday, December 13 at 9:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Tuesday after 2:00 p.m. at the Marian Convent.

Parents and siblings spelled their last name as McDonald.
