Sister Maria Augustine Maher, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, November 29, 1997, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on May 17, 1903 in Hop Bottom, PA, and given the name Mary A. She was the daughter of the late John J. and Mary Catherine O’Connor Maher. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 13, 1924, made temporary profession of her vows on August 15, 1926, and final profession of her vows on December 8, 1930.

Sister Maria Augustine served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Thomas Elementary School in Bedford, PA; St. Mary of the Assumption Elementary School in Upper Marlboro, MD; St. Thomas Regional School in Providence, RI; and St. Monica Elementary School in Raleigh, NC. She also taught at elementary schools located in Cresson, PA, and Brooklyn, NY.

Sister also served in dining services at Marywood College in Scranton, PA, from 1937 to 1958.

From 1979 until the time of her death, Sister Maria Augustine served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret, Sister M. Joseph, IHM, and Dorothy; and a brother, Michael.

She is survived by nephews, Michael Maher of Des Plaines, IL, David Maher of Clark’s Summit, PA, and John Maher of Hop Bottom, PA; a niece, Helen O’Connor, of West Hollywood, CA; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

The funeral will be Wednesday, December 3, at 10:00 a.m., with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Tuesday after 2:00 p.m. at the Marian Convent.
