Sister M. Hilary Meehan, IHM

May 11, 1921 – January 23, 1998

Sister M. Hilary Meehan, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on January 23, 1998 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on May 11, 1921, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and given the name Mary. She was the daughter of the late John and Mary Costello Meehan. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1941, made temporary profession of her vows on May 8, 1944, and final profession of her vows on August 2, 1947.

Sister Hilary served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Ann Elementary School in Nyack, NY, from 1944 to 1946; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Asbury Park, NJ, form 1946 to 1953; St. Patrick Elementary School in Oneida, NY, from 1953 to 1958; St. Thomas Elementary School in Providence, RI, from 1958 to 1960; St. Monica Elementary School in Raleigh, NC, from 1960 to 1962; Holy Trinity Elementary School in Poughkeepsie, NY, from 1962 to 1965; St. Ann Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1965 to 1970; St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA, from 1970 to 1976; St. Matthew Elementary School in Wilmington, DE, from 1976 to 1983; and St. Raymond Elementary School in East Rockaway, NY, form 1983 to 1985. She also served as principal at several of these schools.

At Marywood College in Scranton, PA, Sister also served on the support staff of the post office and library, from 1985 to 1993.

From 1993 to the time of her death, Sister Hilary served in prayer ministry at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by a brother, John.

She is survived by three sisters, Rita McCullough of Wintersville, OH, June Phillips of Syracuse, NY, and Marge of Scranton, PA, a brother, Thomas of Mountain Top, PA, an aunt, Matilda Meehan of Scranton, PA, and several nieces and nephews.

Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemtery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.

Archival Remembrance:

With her lyric soprano voice and the violets that brightened every place she lived and worked, Sr. Hilary brought much beauty to the world. Beauty was what she reflected also in her varied ministries for 54 years where she lovingly touched the hearts and lives of generations of families as an IHM sister.
