Sister Maria Assunta Tomko, IHM

Sister Maria Assunta Tomko, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Saturday, July 29, 1978, at the Mercy Hospital in Scranton, PA.

She was born on December 7, 1901, in Cross Fork, PA, and given the name Katherine (Katie). She was the daughter of the late Paul George and Katherine Theresa Talpas Tomko. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1924, received the religious habit on December 29, 1924 and made profession of her vows August 15, 1926.

Sister Maria Assunta served as a teacher at the following schools: Most Holy Rosary School in Syracuse, NY; and St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Silver Spring, MD. She also taught at schools located in Scranton and Dunmore, PA; Brooklyn, NY; Baltimore and Clinton, MD.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Anthony and Rudolph, and three sisters, Ann Buckley, Theresa Park and Mary Fantaski.

She is survived by two sisters, Genevieve Moths of Largo, FL, and Susan Drake of Los Angeles, CA; and several nieces, nephews and cousins, including Reverend John D. Tomko, who is stationed in Windber, PA.

The funeral will be Tuesday, August 1, 9:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent. Interment will be at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Sunday and Monday at the Marian Convent.
