Sister Maria Assunta Tomko, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Saturday, July 29, 1978, at the Mercy Hospital in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.
Born on December 7, 1901 in Cross Fork, PA; she was the daughter of the late Paul George and Catherine Theresa Talpas Tomko. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1924, received the religious habit on December 29, 1924 and made profession of her vows August 15, 1926.
Sister Maria Assunta served as a teacher at the following schools: Most Holy Rosary School in Syracuse, NY; St. John the Evangelist ElementarySchool in Silver Spring, MD; as well as at schools located in Scranton and Dunmore, PA; Brooklyn, NY; Baltimore and Clinton, MD.
She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Theodore Moths of Largo, FL; and Mrs. Susan Drake of Los Angeles, CA; several nieces and nephews; and cousins, including Reverend John D. Tomko, who is stationed in Windber, PA.
The funeral will be Tuesday, August 1, with Mass at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent. Interment will be at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent Sunday and Monday.
