Sister M. Uriel Hurst, IHM

Sister M. Uriel Hurst, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Sunday, May 6, 1973, at Mercy Hospital in Scranton, PA.
She was born on February 17, 1881 in Scranton, PA, and given the name Mary E. She was the daughter of the late Thomas F. and Mary Ann Holland Hurst. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1906, received the religious habit on December 27, 1906, and made profession of her vows on April 13, 1909.
Sister Uriel served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Leo High School in Ashley, PA: St. Joseph High School in Renovo, PA; and St. Mary of Mount Carmel Elementary School in Dunmore, PA. In 1912, Sister was one of the first teachers at the new mission school of St. Patrick Parochial School in Spangler, PA. When St Mary-John School in Cresson, PA, opened in 1928, Sister Uriel was appointed as a member of the original faculty.
Sister also served as a catechetical instructor at St. Peter’s Catechetical Center in Wellsboro, PA.
From 1966 until the time of her death, Sister Uriel served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas F., Jr. and Edward J., and a sister, Anna Regina McCaffrey.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews, including Sister M. Dorothy McCaffrey, IHM, stationed Washington, DC, Sister Margaret Mary McCaffrey, C.PP.S. stationed in Lafayette, IN, and Mrs. Joseph Quinn of Morris Plains, NJ.
The funeral will be Tuesday, May 8 at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent in Scranton, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Monday after 2:00 p.m. at the Marian Convent.
