Sister M. St. John Ortner, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Wednesday, September 29, 1982, at North Shore Hospital in Manhasset, NY.

She was born on August 10, 1909 in Brooklyn, NY, and given the name Lillian. She was the daughter of the late Louis P. and Lillian Louisa Meiss Ortner. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1929, received the religious habit on August 2, 1929, and made profession of her vows on July 31, 1931.

Sister St. John served as a teacher at the following schools: St. John the Evangelist High School in Scranton, PA; Marywood Seminary in Scranton, PA; Dunmore Central Catholic High School in Dunmore, PA; St. Joseph High School in Renovo, PA; St. Matthew High School in East Stroudsburg, PA; and St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay, NY. She also taught as at high schools located in Baltimore, MD.

Sister served as principal and superior at Archbishop Neale School in LaPlata, MD.

At the time of her death, Sister St. John was as a math and science teacher at St. Mary’s High School in Manhasset, NY.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Louis, Jr.

She is survived by three sisters, Sister Mary Alois Ortner, IHM, of St. Patrick’s Convent in Scranton, PA, Helen C. Ortner of Brooklyn, NY, and Aloise Kowalski of Toms River, NJ; a brother, Reverend John Ortner, S.J. of Brooklyn, NY; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Saturday, October 2, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Manhasset, NY. Interment will be held on Monday, October 4, at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Friday, from 3:00 to 5:00 or 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Convent in Manhasset, NY.
