Sister M. St. Charles Cullen, IHM

Sister M. St. Charles Cullen, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, May 8, 2003 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
She was born on October 8, 1908 in Athens, Pennsylvania, and given the name Mary Hilda. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Julia Burke Cullen. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1929, made temporary profession of her vows on August 2, 1932, and final profession of her vows on August 2, 1935.
Sister St. Charles was an accomplished musician and served as a music teacher at the following schools: St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale, PA, from 1932 to 1942; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Pittston, PA, from 1943 to 1945; Epiphany Elementary School in Sayre, PA, from 1951 to 1955; St. Joseph Elementary School in Williamsport, PA, from 1955 to 1961; St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA, from 1961 to 1967; St. Dominic Elementary School in Oyster Bay, NY; Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in NY; as well as at schools located in Pittsburgh, PA, and Forest Hills, NY.
Sister also served as a catechetical instructor at Holy Name of Mary Catechetical Center in Montrose, PA, from 1950 to 1951; and St. Peter Catechetical Center in Wellsboro, PA, from 1967 to 1968.
From 1993 until the time of her death, Sister St. Charles served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.
She received a Bachelor of Music degree from Marywood College, and a Master of Science degree in music from the Juilliard School of Music.
She was preceded in death by a brother, James.
She is survived by a sister, Margaret Frain of Rochester, MN, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
The funeral will be Monday, May 12 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Sunday after 2:00 p.m.
