Sister M. Salome Flynn, IHM

July 28, 1862 – October 17, 1922

Sister M. Salome Flynn, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Tuesday, October 17, 1922, at Marywood College in Scranton, PA.

She was born on July 28, 1862 in Scranton, PA, and given the name Mary. She was the daughter of the late John and Mary Clarke Flynn. She entered the IHM Congregation on October 31, 1891, received the religious habit on May 24, 1892, and made profession of her vows on May 24, 1894.

Sister Salome served a teacher at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Scranton, PA.

From 1902 until the time of her death, Sister Salome served as librarian at Marywood College in Scranton, PA. She also held several positions within the IHM Congregation’s administration.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Robert (infant), Joseph (infant), James and Matthew, and two sisters, Catharine (infant) and Ann.

She is survived by two sisters, Agnes Cecelia Carroll and Nellie J. Walsh, two brothers, Edward P. and Attorney Frank Aloysius, nieces and nephews, all of Scranton, PA.

The funeral will be Friday, October 20 at Marywood College, Scranton, with the Reverend John Flynn Carroll, of Archbald, a nephew of Sister, as the main celebrant with the sermon will be preached by Reverend Father Albert, C.P. of St. Ann’s Monastery, Scranton; both of which were with Sister Salome at the time of her passing. Interment will follow at the Marywood College Cemetery, on the grounds of Marywood College. Visitation will be on Thursday at Marywood College.


Archival Remembrance:

Sister Salome was well and widely known, as she filled various offices of administration in the community. Up to the time of her final illness she was librarian of Marywood College. She labored in the offices she filled with a zeal and devotion that had been characteristic of her life’s work. She will be deeply mourned by the many who have had the privilege of coming in contact with her.
