Sister M. Roselle Sullivan, IHM

October 7, 1891 – July 31, 1983

Sister M. Roselle Sullivan, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Sunday morning, July 31, 1983, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

Daughter of the late Michael and Louise Thall Sullivan, she was born on October 7, 1891 in Albany Township, Pennsylvania. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 15, 1910, she received the religious habit on August 2, 1912 and made profession of her vows on August 3, 1914.

Sister Roselle served as a teacher and principal at the following high schools: St. Ann in Scranton; Holy Rosary in Scranton; St. Leo in Ashley; St. Mary of Mount Carmel in Dunmore; IHM Academy in Coeur d’Alene, ID; St. Ephrem in Brooklyn, NY; Immaculate Conception in Lock Haven; St. Patrick in Olyphant; St. Joseph in Renovo; as well as at schools located in Susquehanna and Pittsburgh, PA.

Sister also served as the Director of Madonna Hall at Marywood College in Scranton, from 1967 to 1971.

From 1971 until the time of her death, she served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, James F., Joseph, Edward P., John M., and Michael X.; and two sisters, Anna Mary Rouse and Marian V. Sullivan.

She is survived by nieces and nephews, among them Reverend John Brennan, O.S.F.S., of Philadelphia, PA.

The funeral will be Tuesday with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in the Marian Convent Chapel. Interment will be at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent Monday afternoon or evening.

Daughter of the late Michael and Louise Thall Sullivan, Sister Rosselle (sic) was a member of St. Francis Parish in Overton, Pennsylvania. She entered the IHM Congregation on Aug. 15, 1910, received the religious habit on Aug. 2, 1912, and made profession of her vows on Aug. 3, 1914.

Her long career as a high school teacher and principal included assignments in IHM schools in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; Brooklyn, N.Y.; Susquehanna, Pittstburgh, Lock Haven, Olyphant, and Renoa (sic), Pa. She was also a member of the faculty of St. Ann’s and Holy Rosary, this city, St. Leo’s Ashley, and St. Mary’s dunmore. Sister Roselle served as director of Madonna Hall, Marywood, for four years before retiring to the Marian Convent in 1971.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews, among them Rev. John Brennan, OSFS, of Philadelphia.
