Sister M. Rosanna O’Boyle, IHM

April 6, 1881 – January 11, 1967

Sister M. Rosanna O’Boyle, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Wednesday, January 11, 1967 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on April 6, 1881 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and given the name Cecilia. She was the daughter of the late Professor Anthony F. and Rosanna Stevens O’Boyle. She entered the IHM Congregation on July 2, 1904, received the religious habit on December 8, 1904, and made profession of her vows on December 27, 1906.

Sister Rosanna served as a music teacher at the following schools: St. Basil Elementary School in Dushore, PA, from 1907 to 1917; St. Bernard Elementary School in Hastings, PA, from 1917 to 1921; St. Mary Elementary School in Avoca, PA, from 1921 to 1923; St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale, PA, from 1923 to 1929; St. Thomas Elementary School in Providence, RI, from 1929 to 1932 and 1934 to 1946; Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Elementary School in Forest Hills, NY, from 1932 to 1934; Sacred Heart of Mary Elementary School in Jermyn, PA, from 1946 to 1950; St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Dunmore, PA, from 1950 to 1952 and 1953 to 1963; and St. Ann Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1950 to 1953.

From 1963 until the time of her death, Sister Rosanna served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is preceded in death by two brothers, Robert E. and William H., and six sisters, Agnes, Bibina, Anna, Catherine, Lucy Coughlin and Frances Carr.

She is survived by a sister, Mary Elizabeth O’Malley of Scranton, PA, and a brother, Charles Henry of Scranton, PA, nieces and nephews.

Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
