Sister M. Raymond Rafferty, IHM

Sister M. Raymond Rafferty, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, November 20, 1999, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.
She was born on August 28, 1909 in Scranton, PA, and given the name Agnes. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret McAndrew Rafferty. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 7, 1928, made temporary profession of her vows on April 14, 1931, and final profession of her vows on August 2, 1934.
Sister Raymond served as a principal and teacher at the following schools: St. Mary of Mount Carmel Elementary School in Dunmore, PA, from 1935 to 1945; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Pittston, PA, from 1968 to 1969; Holy Name of Jesus Elementary School in Forty Fort, PA, from 1970 to 1974; and St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1974 to 1987.
Sister served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Paul Elementary School in Cranston, RI; Our Lady of Grace Elementary School in Greensboro, NC; and St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Binghamton, NY. She also taught at elementary schools located in Pittsburgh, PA, and Mount Holly, NJ.
From 1989 until the time of her death, Sister Raymond was a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English/music from Marywood College.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Rose Rafferty, Margaret Rafferty and Mary R. Keeler; and six brothers, Joseph, John, Charles, Aloysius, Thomas and James.
She is survived by three nephews, Thomas Keeler of Clark’s Summit, PA, James Rafferty of Scranton, PA, and John Rafferty of Greensboro, NC; and a niece, Angela Rafferty of Union City, NJ.
The funeral will be Tuesday, November 23, at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Monday between 2:00 and 8:00 p.m. at the Marian Convent.
