Sister M. Paulina Langan, IHM

Sister M. Paulina Langan, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Wednesday, June 19, 1996 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
She was born on July 29, 1900 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and given the name Sarah. She was the daughter of the late Michael J. and Sarah Barrett Langan, and the step-daughter of the late Catherine McCann Langan. She entered the IHM Congregation on March 25, 1917, made her temporary profession of vows on August 2, 1919 and her final profession of vows on December 8, 1930.
Sister Paulina served as a teacher at the following schools: Holy Rosary Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1919 to 1920; Most Holy Rosary School in Syracuse, NY, from 1920 to 1926; St. Rita Elementary School in Baltimore, MD, from 1926 to 1932 and 1943 to 1949; St. Patrick Elementary School in Oneida, NY, from 1932 to 1933; St. Raymond Elementary School in East Rockaway, NY, from 1933 to 1943; Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Elementary School in Forest Hills, NY, from 1949 to 1950; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Binghamton, NY, from 1955 to 1961; Holy Name Elementary School in Forty Fort, PA, from 1961 to 1967; St. Patrick Elementary School in Olyphant, PA, from 1967 to 1970; Sacred Heart of Mary Elementary School in Jermyn, PA, from 1970 to 1971; and Our Lady of Mercy Elementary School in Forest Hills, NY, from 1971 to 1984.
Sister also served as the Director of Novices for the IHM Congregation in Scranton, PA, from 1950 to 1955.
From 1984 until the time of her death, Sister Paulina served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.
She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education, and a Master of Arts degree in education, both from Marywood College.
She was preceded in death four sisters, Lucy, Anne, Mary Serroi and Agnes Regan, and four brothers, Edward, Joseph, Eugene and Thomas (Frank).
She is survived by a sister, Katherine Farley of Scranton, PA, and several nieces and nephews.
Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA.

Sister M. Paulina Langan spent 77 years as an IHM sister not only teaching the gospel message, but living it to the full. A gentle woman, she led many young people to root their lives more deeply in faith through her loving service as a teacher in elementary schools. Sister Paulina had a significant influence on the lives of many IHM sisters. Having served as the Director of Novices from 1950 to 1955, she challenged young sisters to believe, pray and grow in holiness. As a treasured leader, she encouraged many through her capacity to find and affirm the good in each person.
