Sister M. Brigid O’Leary, IHM

January 18, 1913 – June 8, 1996

Sister M. Brigid O’Leary, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, June 8, 1996 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on January 18, 1913 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and given the name Julia Brigid. She was the daughter of the late Denis and Catherine Duffy O’Leary. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 1, 1942, made temporary profession of her vows on August 2, 1944, and final profession of her vows on August 2, 1947.

Sister Brigid served as a teacher at the following schools: St. John the Evangelist High School in Pittston, PA, from 1944 to 1949; St. Paul High School in Scranton, PA, from 1949 to 1951 and 1959 to 1960; St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay, NY; as well as in secondary schools in Pittsburgh and Williamsport, PA, and Manhasset in NY. She also served as an instructor at the IHM Educational Enrichment Center in Scranton, PA, from 1991 to 1992.

Sister served as principal at St. John High School in Susquehanna, PA, from 1960 to 1966.

From 1992 until the time of her death, Sister Brigid served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She received a Bachelor of Science degree in history from Indiana University in 1934, and a Master of Arts degree in European history from Villanova University in 1954.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Kathleen O’Leary, Ann Cecelia O’Leary and Sister M. Dioynsia O’Leary, IHM, and five brothers, Monsignor Joseph O’Leary, Reverend John O’Leary, Dr. Thomas O’Leary, Attorney Patrick E. O’Leary and Dr. James M. O’Leary.

She is survived by two sisters Eileen Dumm of Altoona, PA, and Rita Spellman of Drexel Hill, PA, nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Wednesday, June 12 with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent at 10:30 a.m., followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call on Tuesday at the Marian Convent after 2:00 p.m.
