Sister M. Nativite Layden, IHM

October 11, 1915 – October 9, 1993

Sister M. Nativite Layden, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, October 9, 1993, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on October 11, 1915 in Carbondale, PA, and given the name Elizabeth. She was the daughter of the late Patrick and Julia Brennan Layden. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1938, was received into the novitiate on May 8, 1939, and made profession of her vows on May 8, 1941.

Sister Nativite served as a teacher at the following schools: Epiphany Elementary School in Sayre, PA; St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Dunmore, PA; St. John Elementary School in Susquehanna, PA; St. Ambrose Elementary School in Bridgeport, CT; St. Ann Elementary School in Nyack, NY; St. Paul Elementary School in Cranston, RI; and Cathedral Elementary School in Scranton, PA. She also taught at elementary schools located in Lock Haven, PA, and Baltimore, MD.

Sister also served as an catechetical instructor at St. Peter Catechetical Center in Wellsboro, PA; and St. Agnes Catechetical Center in Forest City, PA.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Thomas, Francis, William and James.

She is survived by a sister, Helen Monahan of Carbondale, PA; a brother, Joseph of Elizabeth, NJ; and several nieces.

The will be Tuesday, October 12, at 7:00 p.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent. Interment will be at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Tuesday, from 1:00 p.m. on at the Marian Convent.
