Sister M. Monica Quinn, IHM

Sister M. Monica Quinn, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Wednesday, January 2, 1946, at St. Joseph’s Children’s and Maternity Hospital in Scranton, PA.

She was born on October 28, 1865 in Yatesville PA, and given the name Bridget. She was the daughter of the late Patrick and Ann Gillespie Quinn. She entered the IHM Congregation on April 18, 1884, received the religious habit on July 31, 1884, and made profession of her vows on August 10, 1886.

Sister Monica served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Patrick School in White Haven, PA; St. Joseph School in Williamsport, PA; St. Ann School in Scranton, PA; St. Leo School in Ashley, PA; and St. Mary of the Mount School in Pittsburgh, PA.

Sister served as principal and superior at the following schools: St. Basil School in Dushore, PA, and St. Rose School in Carbondale, PA.

The Bishop of the Diocese of Harrisburg, PA, requested that Sister Monica serve as Mistress of Novices for the Sisters of Saints Cyril and Methodius at their Motherhouse in both Middletown, PA, and later in Danville, PA, from 1918 to 1923. She later served as the Mistress of Novices for the Sisters of Jesus Crucified at St. Mary’s Villa in Elmhurst, PA, from 1923 to 1927.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Sister M. Andrew, IHM, and two brothers, Peter and John.

She is survived by a brother, Edward J. of Wilkes-Barre, PA; and a sister, Sister M. Benigus, IHM, stationed at St. John the Evangelist Convent in Pittston, PA.

The funeral will be Saturday, January 5, at 9:00 a.m. in the chapel at St. Joseph’s Children’s and Maternity Hospital, Scranton, followed by interment at Cathedral Cemetery in Scranton, PA. Friends may call at St. Joseph’s Children’s and Maternity Hospital on Friday.

Archival Remembrance:

Sister Monica helped form two religious communities, serving six years as novice mistress of the Sisters of SS. Cyril and Methodius at the order’s original foundation in Middletown, PA, and later at the present motherhouse, Sacred Heart Villa in Danville, PA. She also was the first mistress of novices of the Sisters of Jesus Crucified at St. Mary’s Villa in Elmhurst, PA. Her adherence to principle, rectitude and skill as a molder of character endeared her to sisters of the two congregations. She later served as a teacher at St. Patrick’s School, White Haven, for twenty-five years. Sister Monica was well-known for her experience in both religious life and teaching.
