Sister M. Modesta Walsh, IHM

Sister M. Modesta Walsh, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Sunday, October 15, 1967, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA.

She was born on November 25, 1899, in Scranton, PA, and given the name Mary Catherine. She was the daughter of the late Michael J. and Mary Catherine Rafferty Walsh. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1920, received the religious habit on August 6, 1920, and made profession of her vows on August 15, 1922.

Sister Modesta served as a teacher at the following schools: St. John the Evangelist School in Pittston, PA, from 1921 to 1922; and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School in Altoona, PA, from 1922 to 1929.

In 1932, Sister Modesta received a nursing degree from Saint Mary’s University in Rochester, MN. From 1932 to 1967, Sister was stationed at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA, where she was a nurse, and later advanced to the position of supervisor in the surgery and operating departments.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert Aloysius and Robert M.

She is survived by three sisters, Helen A. Bigelow of Landsdowne, PA, Clare Kearns of Scranton, PA, and Grace Walsh of Newark, NJ; two brothers, Thomas of Scranton, PA, and Gerald of Moscow, PA; and several nieces and nephews, including Mother Mary Samuel, S.C.H.J. of Portland, OR.

The funeral will be Tuesday, October 17, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call at the St. Joseph’s Hospital Convent on Monday afternoon or evening.
