Sister Mary Michael Colligan, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Tuesday, January 5, 1937 at Marywood Seminary in Scranton, PA.
She was born on June 12, 1856 in Scotland, and given the name Catharine (Katie). She was the daughter of the late Patrick, Sr. and Ann Barry Colligan. In 1866, the family immigrated to the United States, where they first resided in Susquehanna, PA, for several years, and later settled in Scranton, PA. She entered the IHM Congregation on October 4, 1875, received the religious habit on April 25, 1876, and made profession of her vows on May 8, 1878.
Sister Mary Michael served as teacher at the following schools: St. Joseph School in Williamsport, PA; St. Rose School in Carbondale, PA; Laurel Hill Academy in Susquehanna, PA; and St. John the Evangelist School in Pittston, PA.
Sister served as principal and superior at the following schools: St. Cecilia School in Exeter, PA; St. Mary School in Hollidaysburg, PA; and Holy Rosary School in Scranton, PA.
Eight years ago, Sister Mary Michael, because of her speldid training and rich experience, was appointed assistant librarian of Marywood College. Since that time she had given generously of her service and talent to the spreading of Catholic literature.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Brother Dominic and Michael.
She is survived by a brother, Reverend Patrick J. Colligan, pastor of St. Vincent’s Church in Plymouth, PA, and a sister, Margaret of Plymouth, PA. She is also survived by the following nephews and nieces: Rev. J.J. Colligan, S.J.,of Fordham University in New York City; Frater Cyril Anthony, O.F.M., of St. Anthony’s Monastery in Butler, NJ; Aloysius Colligan of Scranton, PA; Sister M. Dominic Sullivan, IHM, and Sister M. Anina Sulivan, IHM, both of St. John’s Convent in Bellefonte, PA; Sister Maria Michael Donnelly, IHM, of St. Mary’s Convent in Avoca, PA; Mary Donnelly of Plymouth, PA; Annie Duffy of Scranton, PA; Anna Gilroy of Binghamton, NY; and Francis Donnelly of Oseouport, NY.
The funeral will be Friday, January 7 at 9:30 a.m. in the Marywood College Chapel in Scranton, PA. Interment will follow at the Marywood College Cemetery. Friends may call at Marywood Seminary on Thursday.
