Sister M. Mericia Brown, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died on Tuesday, April 7, 1981, at St. Rose’s Convent in Carbondale, PA.

She was born on February 23, 1909, in Scranton, PA, and given the name Alice. She was daughter of the late Thomas Francis and Catherine Mahady Brown. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 2, 1925, received the religious habit on December 28, 1925, and made profession of her vows on December 28, 1927.

Sister Mericia taught junior high school subjects at the following schools: St. John Elementary School in Pittston, PA; Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY; St. Patrick Elementary School in Oneida, NY; and St. Dominic Elementary School in Oyster Bay, NY. She also taught at IHM schools in Pittsburgh and Lock Haven, PA.

From 1978 until the time of her death, Sister Mericia was a prayer minister at St. Rose’s Convent in Carbondale.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, John Cornelius, Thomas Francis Jr., Carl S., William Henry and Jerome Wilson; and three sisters, Mary Brown, Margaret Smith and Frances Loretta McCann.

She is survived by a sister, Kathleen Feeney of Scranton, PA; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Thursday April 9, at 9:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent in Scranton. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Wednesday evening.
